In our earlier update on the reopening dates for all basic schools, we mentioned that it is the reopening date for All Basic Schools and Junior high schools is the 3rd of October 2023.

In that same update, we also mentioned that these dates are subject to confirmation by GES.

In light of that, the Director-General of GES, Prof Opoku-Amankwa in a TV interview today made it known that the official reopening date for all Basic Schools in Ghana ( from Creche, KG, Primary to JHS) is 3rd October 2023.

According to Prof Opoku-Amankwa, Schools were supposed to be opened on 3rd October 2023, but an additional week has been added as a result of the extra week spent by the basic school’s last term due to the newly introduced National Standardized Test for class 4 pupils.

“We, therefore, decided to add an extra one week on their holiday break for both the teachers and the pupils as compensation”.

The Director in his statement further added that the delay in communicating the reopening dates to the general public is because management is still in the process of coming out with a stable Senior High School academic calendar.

“To ensure that we get it right this time around, and avoid some of the inconveniences that occurred during the 2023 academic year in relation to the calendar structure, a Ministerial Committee on Schools Calendar was formed by the Minister of Education, to ensure proper planning to come out with a reliable structure”.

“A call from the Committee this morning indicates that everything is done. The white paper has been given to the Minister for a final check before it can be issued to the general public”. he added.
