Q6.

Knowing how best to use a dictionary wi save one a lot of agony Some students do not have the slightest idea of how to find a word in the dictionary. The first step in mastering the use of a dictionary is to realize that words are arranged alphabetical!; and not just scattered anyhow. For instance, one would expect to find words beginning with the letter ‘a’ on the first pages of the dictionary while words beginning with ‘b’ would come next, followed by those beginning with ‘c’ and so on, till one comes to words starting with ‘x’, ‘y’ and ‘z’. Furthermore, within each of these word groups, further alphabetical arrangement are made, such that within the ‘a’ word family, for instance, words with ‘aa’ would be found before those with ‘ab’. Therefore the word ‘aardvark’, which is the name of an animal, would be found before ‘abacus’ a counting instrument. This principle obtains for each of the word groups throughout the dictionary.

If one has an idea of the size of the dictionary, and the position of a particular letter in the alphabet, one can tap such knowledge to determine quickly where in the dictionary a particular word can be found. For instance, knowing that ‘L’ and ‘M come right in the middle of the alphabetical list should guide one’s steps straight to the middle of the dictionary for words like ‘land’, “lime’, ‘maintain’, ‘millennium’, etc. With such knowledge, one will realize that it is futile looking for an ‘s’ word in the first half of y dictionary because ‘s’ comes much later than ‘m’. This principle should enable one to decide the approximate position of any word before consulting the dictionary.

Apart from giving the meaning of words, the dictionary often gives a very good hint on their proper usage. For instance, it shows the preposition which should follow a verb to get a a specific meaning. Consider the expressions ‘to take over’, ‘to take up’, and ‘to take on’, have different meanings. Each phrasal verb is explained with examples. Besides, good dictionary indicates idiomatic and figurative uses of certain words. It also often indicates when a word is used informally, when it is outdated, or when it has several meanings. So, a dictionary should be seen as a versatile tool in the hands of a student.

SECTION C (SUMMARY)

Read the following passage carefully and answer, in your own words as far as possible, the questions on it.

Most people in the world do not make things happen. Rather, there is just a small percentage of people who make things happen, who make the world go round.
These few are those who think of new concepts, brainstorm intensively on them, and bring them to reality. Thus, they end up as inventors, political thinkers and actors, great scientists, manufacturers, company owners and consequently, employers of labour. As a result of their activities, they become powerful and influential, usually but not necessarily wealthy. In most cases, they are in positions that decide the fate of thousands of other people. However, they have one great shortcoming: they are very often restless. Always active, forever thinking of new things, they hardly ever have the grace to rest and enjoy the fruit of their labour. This is why some of them never live long; after all, a brooms that sweeps continually wears out quickly.

The next category of people are far greater in number than the first. These are those who see to the actualisation of the dream of the first category of people. They are hired to see to it that the work initiated by the thinkers is done. Whether they are highly trained technocrats or entirely untrained labourers, they carry out the instructions carefully crafted by the thinkers and planners. They are the interpreters of dreams. For their roles, they may end up just earning their daily bread, earning just enough to feed their families or as very comfortable millionaires, able to live in good accommodation, rented or owned. But the fact remains that they are highly vulnerable since the brains that hired them may easily fire them.

Finally, these are those who form the bulk of humanity, those at the very bottom of the pyramid. These are people just passing through the world without any clear idea of what their roles are. They do not initiate any programme, or think of creating anything, and most often do not possess any skills. They live off those in the higher echelons of life. In effect, they do not decide the fate of others but have their decided for them; they cannot be a live about what tomorrow has for them or where they will find themselves the next day. However, because of their numerical strength, they should be the most powerful block since in a democracy they could determine who gets the political power. In reality however, they hardly ever utilize this potential power and are thus most often ignored by the few in authority. So, indeed, they are the most vulnerable to all.

(a) In three sentences, one for each, identify the three categories of people described in the passage.

(b) In three sentences one for each, summarize the disadvantage of each category.
