Diploma in Basic Education (Regular & Sandwich)

The Diploma in Basic Education programme addresses the need for well-trained teachers in Ghana, focusing on improving student outcomes through comprehensive, generalist training. It provides a broad foundation in all subjects, aligning with national education goals and preparing graduates to effectively teach at the basic education level and pursue advanced studies.

Target Group

The target market will include, but not be limited to;

  1. Teachers Certificate ‘A’ holders
  2. Candidates with average passes in senior high/secondary school certificates who may be working in the underlisted as:
    • Private School Teachers
    • Organisers of in-service training for basic schools
    • Administrators of private educational institutions
    • Leaders and workers in Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)

Entry Requirement

The entry requirements for the Diploma in Basic Education programme are as follows:

  1. WASSCE: Credit passes in Six (6) subjects including two (2) core subjects (A1-D7) plus Credit passes (A1–D7) in two (2) electives.
  2. SSSCE: Credit passes (A – D) in six (6) subjects comprising two (2) Core Subjects including English Language and Mathematics, plus two (2) elective subjects.
  3. GCE ‘O’ Level: Credit passes (Grade 1-7) in five (5) subjects and any two (2) core subject such as English Language, Mathematics, and Integrated science subject.
  4. Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’: Teacher’s Certificate ‘A’ from a recognized College of Education or Institution.
  5. General Business Certificate Examination (GBCE) results should have credit passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (2) core subjects including English Language, Integrated Science or Social Studies, and Core Mathematics plus three (2) relevant elective subjects.
  6. International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)/International Baccalaureate (IB) must possess at least Grades A*/A-C in English, Mathematics, and Biology at the Standard (SL)/’O’ Level, in addition to three Higher Level (HL – A to C)/’A’ Level (A to D)/IB 2 (A to C) grades in the relevant subjects.
  7. Mature applicants (25 years and above): Can apply (and will be admitted upon passing and entrance examination)

M.Ed. in Basic Education (Sandwich)

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Basic Education equips educators with advanced knowledge, skills, and specialisations in subjects like English, Science, and Mathematics. It focuses on curriculum design, pedagogy, and research, preparing educators for leadership roles and contributing to educational innovation and policy. The programme aligns with Ghana’s national goals for quality education.

Prospects/Career Options

The potential employers of the graduates produced by the programme will be the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and Public and Private Colleges of Education running the undergraduate or diploma programmes in Basic Education, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) into education and education related programmes.

Target Group

Prospective applicants are those who possess the following degrees:

  1. B.Ed. in Basic Education, Early Childhood, Special Education, Guidance and Counselling degrees or
  2. Other graduates in subject areas acceptable by GES to be taught in the classrooms or
  3.  Foreign applicants holding relevant and or equivalent qualifications indicated in i & ii.

Entry Requirement

A candidate seeking admission into M. Ed. Basic Education programme should have obtained:

  1. A bachelor’s (B.Ed.) Basic Education Degree from UEW or an equivalent qualification from any other University or College of Education recognized by the Academic Board of the UEW, with a grade not below Second Class Lower.
  2. Foreign applicants: Foreign applicants from accredited institutions with equivalent      qualifications will be considered for admission.

NB: Candidates with Third Class will have to pass a Departmental examination and an interview before they are admitted.
