About the Scholarship

The Ghana Scholarships Secretariat was established in 1960 as an extra-ministerial body under the Office of the President mandated to administer all government scholarships both locally and abroad.

Its main programmes and activities fall under the thematic area; Human Resource Development, Employment and Productivity under the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSGDA) and Goal 4 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) specifically addressing;

  • Provision of quality education
  • Human Capital Development, Productivity, and Labour Relations, thus providing for the manpower needs of the country.

The impact of these interventions is found in the areas of increased access to quality training to needy, brilliant, and deserving students at the tertiary education level. The Human Resource deficit in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is been fully acknowledged and strategies have been developed over the years to address the gap in society.

In line with the strategic directive of H. E. the President of the Republic of Ghana, the Secretariat initiated processes aimed at increasing access and ensuring transparency in its scholarship awards and administration processes.

This culminated into the piloting of the award processes at the Regional levels in the 2018/2019 academic year and narrowed to the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Levels in the 2019/2020 academic year.

The period witnessed significant strides or achievement in the increase of scholarships awarded to Ghanaian students pursuing higher education in the local tertiary institutions both public and private. More than thirty thousand (30,000) Ghanaian students in the locally accredited tertiary institutions benefitted from the scheme in the 2019/2020 academic year.

Leveraging on the decentralized scholarship processes, there was the need to introduce a system for improved service delivery.

The new Online Scholarship Application and Administration System will help to eliminate the inconvenient experiences of applicants seeking government sponsorships and also help the Secretariat in proper and efficient administration of scholarships in the country, as well as increasing accessibility.
