Sol Plaatje University: The first fully constituted Council of the Sol Plaatje University was inaugurated on 19 August 2014. This was both an important milestone and a proud moment in this early stage of the development of the University. For the first year of the life of the University, the governance function was in the hands of a five-person Interim Council which was very ably chaired by Ms. Jenny Glennie.

The other members were Dr. Yvonne Muthien, Mr. Abel Madonsela, Mr. Maruping Lekwene, and Prof Vishnu Padayachee. The installation of the full Council signals the University entering the next phase of the increasing maturity of its internal academic management and governance structures.

The new Council is composed of ten external members, appointed by the Interim Council after a public nomination process, five external members appointed by the Minister of Higher Education and Training, eight academic and support staff members of the University and two student representatives. A brief profile of each of the Council members can be found under the ‘Council Members’ section of the website.

Admission Requirement

This page sets the minimum academic requirements for admission into study programmes at Sol Plaatje University in 2017. The requirements are based on the results that applicants achieve in the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. Applicants who hold certificates from a different examination system will be considered individually for admission.

Note that if you satisfy the minimum admission requirements stated here, this does not automatically mean that you will be admitted to the study programme at SPU. The final decision on your admission will be based on your academic performance and the availability of space in the programme. The better your academic performance above this minimum, the better will be your chance of being admitted to study at SPU.

How to Apply

Step 2: Complete your application form in full.

Step 3: Attach all supporting documents.

You need to attach certified copies of all of your documentation as well as your proof of payment of your application fee. This includes:

proof of payment of the application fee (R100)
copy of your ID
copy of your latest Matric results
copy of age exemption letter from Matric Board (if applicable – older than 23)
You are required to have your academic transcripts and ID certified to prove to the university that those are the real documents. You can have your documents certified at any police station or anyone who holds Commander of Oaths rights (like a lawyer).

Step 4: Complete a student accommodation form if you need to organise living arrangements.

Registration Date

FINANCIAL INFORMATION FOR RETURNING AND FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

UPFRONT TUITION FEE PAYMENT

R5,000.00 is required to be paid prior to registration (proof needs to be submitted) if unfunded.

Students who have confirmation of a bursary from an organisation do not have to make the upfront payment. (Proof needs to be submitted).

CONFIRMATION OF RESIDENCE PLACE

Payment of R5,000.00 is required to confirm a place in residence (proof needs to be submitted), if unfunded.

Students who have confirmation of a bursary must submit proof thereof and the upfront residence amount is waivered.

APPEAL PROCESS

Those who are unable to afford the upfront payments, need to submit a letter of appeal to the University Registrar with a full motivation, supported by a statement of the family income and to include all efforts made to secure alternate sources of funding.
