Mr. President,

WHY THE BAN ON SOCIAL GATHERING SHOULD BE LIFTED?

It is very sad to figure out that the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country has had a negative impact on our daily lives. It has made Ghana as a nation, and Ghanaians as citizens to lose a lot in terms of their jobs and other activities they are involved in.

Notwithstanding the fact that some major cities in the country were earlier kept under a partial lockdown and later comes, the extension of the ban on the social gathering. All these no doubts are some of the measures that the president has taken to curb the spread of the virus in the country.

Mr. President, in my humble opinion, justifiable by the number of recent recoveries against the total confirmed cases, you should consider lifting the ban on social gathering in the country.  Why am I saying this?

Mr.President, There are key areas in which the ban on social gathering has really affected us as a nation. Areas such as Education, Religion, and the economy are the major sectors that have been affected by this ban. It is very crucial that the ban on social gatherings should be lifted with immediate effect.

Mr. President, to expatiate on education, it is one of the sectors which was affected by this ban on social gathering. Students have to be dismissed to their various homes and they were given the online platform to learn. There is no extra tuition at home because students and teachers have to follow the directives.

Looking at learning, it sometimes requires a number of people coming together to share ideas and also develop ways and means of doing so. But here is the case there is a ban on gathering.

Schools are the right places for the activities to take place. Most students find it very difficult to pay attention to the online tuition and even others don’t have access to it, won’t this be the cause of producing unqualified and inexperience leaders in the country if the ban is not lifted?

It is very important to have such initiative in the fight of COVID-19 but we also have to think about the consequences from a different perspective. In the case of education, the ban has made it difficult for others to concentrate on their lessons.

Closing schools is likely to result in children spending more time in crowded places such as shopping malls or with grandparents who are at high risk of a serious complication. Education plays a key role in the upbringing of youth and these are done in the various institutions, and so, therefore, the ban on social gathering should be lifted.

Mr. President, the ban on social gathering is having a huge impact on economic activities. Among the worst-hit are hotels and tourist sites. Even before the ban was imposed, some of these areas have experienced an average drop of patronage.  Scheduled international conference in Ghana has to be canceled including the 4th African Union conference. Trade values are reducing because of the ban on social gatherings.

These are all activities that generate income to the nation, but the ban on social gathering has made it difficult for most people to visit tourist sites and other public places for convenience. This tends to reduce income from these places.

Agriculture forms part of the economy it is one of the major reasons why we survive as humans. The impact on agriculture may not be severe; growth could be slow as a result of disruptions. The ban could make it difficult for farmers to have access to seeds, fertilizer and fear could negatively affect planting.

In most of our communities, we normally go in groups for planting and the application of fertilizer. The ban could make it difficult for this to happen. This has a great effect on the nation; the production of foodstuffs will be very low and if it continues for a longer time, then the nation has to spend on importing food to the country. In order not this to happen the ban on mass gathering has to be lifted.

In our societies, there is one quality among us that keeps all of us moving and this is worship. Church services and other religious activities are halted in the country. There is no doubt that religious activity such as church service brings more people together and the likelihood of spreading the virus will be very high.

But do we have to halt such duties to the Supreme Being?  People normally say that nothing can stop the virus we just have to pray. And now that places of worship are all close down to curb the spread, what should we do? Prayers in the congregation are much and far better than individual prayers. The ban must be lifted to bring back the smooth running of our religious activities. Easter and other events passed all celebrated individually, we are supposed to honor such events but were all celebrated individually.

Mr. President, bring back life to normal is a must. We want to see our children having enough time in schools, to enable them to cope up with colleagues to learn rather than missing these online lectures. We want to see the country producing enough foodstuffs to sustain health as usual and most important, we want to honor the Supreme Being as it is supposed to be. This can be achieved by lifting the ban you imposed on social gatherings. Other measures will be strictly followed.

I write on behalf of the entire nation to plead on the ban to be lifted. I am a citizen and not a spectator.

Yours faithfully,
Sadik Zakari.
