Definition of Degree

A degree is a certificate given to a student by an accredited and recognized university or college for the successful completion of his/her studies in a course at a particular level. Students can pursue degree courses after passing the higher secondary examination. Degree certificates are awarded to the students in the convocation ceremony organized by the university or college. There are four (4) major types of degrees, and they are;

Associate Degree
Bachelor Degree
Master Degree
Doctorate Degree

A diploma is a certificate given to a student by an accredited and recognized university or educational institution for the successful completion of a course of study. Admission to the diploma course can be taken after the Senior High School examination. They are two major types of diploma certificates, they are:

Graduate Diploma
Post Graduate Diploma

The differences that exist between Degrees and Diploma

A degree course is usually a 3 to 4-year long course conferred by a UGC-recognized university, after the completion of a course. An institute cannot confer a degree whiles A diploma is a short-term course, lasting 1 or 2 years, and is not necessarily given by a university. It could be conducted by an institute or polytechnic as well.
Typically in a Degree, there is one subject that is your major priority, called specialization whereas other subjects are called electives A diploma is a specific academic award usually awarded for professional/vocational courses.
When a job opportunity comes, a degree holder is preferred over a diploma holder in the same field. This is because the relative importance of a diploma when compared to a degree course is less.
Degree programs give more in-depth knowledge and potentially start you at a higher level, on the other hand, Diploma programs provide education within your given field and get you into the workforce sooner.
Before you study any degree course, you need an “A” level high school qualification, pre-university program, etc before you can do so. But to study a diploma course, all you need to have is your high school qualification.
In terms of the cost of study, Degree Studying students would pay much more than Diploma studying students. It means that a Degree costs more than Diploma.
