WAGMC is building capacity in genetic medicine, including genetic counseling to help West Africa to overcome the developmental health challenge of human genetic disorders in the region.

The Center’s educational goals are to increase the quantity and quality of postgraduate training in human genetics in West Africa. Female candidates and regional candidates (citizens of other African countries) are encouraged to apply to this maiden MSc Genetic Counselling Programme in Sub-Saharan Africa. This programme is accredited by the Chana Tertiary Education Commission (CTEC).

Course Description

The MSc in Genetic Counselling is a professional health degree programme. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to effectively communicate the complex scientific knowledge of human genetics and to provide counseling related to genetic information. The science-practitioner model of the programme, combines critical skills training and rigorous research, uniquely designed to prepare students to practice as Genetic Counselors. The programme will prepare students for lifelong learning exploring both theoretical and practical aspects of genetic counseling with the development of skills in research, teaching, public education, critical thinking, and leadership.

Duration

The MSc in Genetic Counselling is an intensive two-year full-time academic programme. In addition, students who graduate from the programme will be required to complete a mandatory one-year internship under the supervision of the Ghana Psychology Council to become licensed to practice as Genetic Counsellors.

Entry Requirement And Applications 

A good first degree (at least a Second Class Lower Division), in the biomedical sciences, psychological sciences, social sciences, public health, and other health sciences from a recognised University is required. Students with a Third Class may be considered for admission after fulfilling additional requirements.
