In this article, we are going to look at the list of universities in Ghana offering Petroleum Engineering Courses/Programme

The oil and gas course/programme aims at providing graduates with a firm grounding in petroleum engineering covering oil and gas exploration, reservoir engineering, oil well drilling, oil and gas production, and management of associated environmental problems. Successful candidates should be able to manage the exploitation of hydrocarbon resources.

Objectives

The main objectives are:

  • To train competent first-degree graduates.
  • To prepare first-degree graduates to take up jobs in the petroleum and allied industries.
  • To prepare candidates for higher degrees in petroleum and petroleum-related course/ programmes.

There are about four or five sectors of the oil and gas that persons who study the Petroleum Engineering Courses/Programme at the universities can work with. These include:

  • Production Engineers
  • Reservoir Engineer
  • Drilling Engineer
  • Oil Geology Engineers

Petroleum engineers design and develop methods for extracting oil and gas from deposits below the Earth’s surface.

The Production petroleum engineers devise strategies to improve oil and gas extraction and production and also determine the need for new or modified tool designs. The Production Engineer oversees drilling and offers technical advice. They also function in the selection of surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas, and water) through tasks such as perforations, sand control, artificial lift, downhole flow control, and downhole monitoring equipment are managed by these petroleum engineers.

A Reservoir Engineer is an individual who is responsible for the development and the oil production operations of an oil reservoir. The Reservoir engineer uses computer simulation techniques to assist in the identification of risks and to make forecasts on reservoir potential. They also estimate how much oil or gas can be recovered from underground deposits, known as reservoirs by good placement, production levels, and oil recovery enhancement techniques.

A drilling engineer is responsible for planning and executing operations that drill for gas and oil. They work with a team of engineers and do ensure that the drilling process to be carried is safe, with minimal disruption of the earth’s crust. The role played by the drilling engineer is basically to determine the best way and manage the complex technical sector of drilling oil wells-not excluding production and injection of wells.

Oil Geology engineers conduct geological and geotechnical studies to assess the suitability of locations for mining and oil and gas projects. They plan, design, develop and supervise programs of geological data acquisition and analysis and the preparation of geological engineering reports and recommendations.
