Admission Requirement

In terms of the Government Gazette of 26 November 2009, WSU accepts applications from prospective students who have a National Certificate (Vocational-Level 4) and who wish to register for Higher Certificate, Diploma or Degree programmes.

The minimum entry requirements for admission to WSU with a NVC Level 4 are as follows:

Qualification minimum entry requirements

Higher Certificate

  • Must meet NC (V) Level 4 statutory requirements
  • 40% in either home Language or First Additional
  • Language but one must be the Language of Teaching and Teaching (LOTL)
  • 50 % in either Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy
  • 40% in Life Orientation
  • 50% in the four other vocational subjects
  • Submit a record of evidence for any subject failed

Diploma

  • Must meet NC(V) Level 4 statutory requirements
  • 50% in three fundamental subjects including LOTL
  • 60% in three compulsory vocational subjects

Bachelor’s Degree

  • Must meet NC(V) Level 4 statutory requirements
  • 60% in three fundamental subjects including LOTL
  • 70% in three compulsory vocational subjects

General admission requirements

The Higher Education Act No 101 of 1997, amended in May 2008, stipulates the following minimum entry requirements for university programmes as of January 2009:

  • Minimum admission requirements for higher certificate, diploma and Bachelor’s Degree programmes require a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • Policy considerations: Page 2 of the Government Gazette
  • This policy will be applicable to all higher education institutions with effect from January 2009.
  • The policy outlines the statutory minimum admission to higher education at the National Senior Certificate (NSC) level.
  • Though NSC is the primary gateway, it does not guarantee admission to any Programme of study in higher education.
  • Within the context of this policy, WSU exercises its right as a higher education institution to set up specific admission requirements.

Minimum admission requirements

Matric & NSC Requirements

School/Programme prospectuses set out details of NSC and matric requirements for each programme.

Admission Point Score

Applicants who have obtained an NSC qualification must meet the required Admission Point Score (APS) score that is set for each programme.

NSC results are translated into points for each NSC subject. Results of interviews and other assessments may also be taken into account in determining the total APS or Admission Point Score.

Unless otherwise stated within a programme prospectus the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology has, in terms of the new NSC, allocated a rating system according to levels as follows:

Step 2:  Complete your application form in full.

*Remember you’ll need an email address.

Step 3:  Attach all supporting documents.

Step 4:  Complete a student accommodation form.  Please note that this is part of the application process.

SEMESTER ONE ONLINE RESULTS

The university students are hereby informed that online results for the First Semester Examinations are now available on the link below.

Please note due to technical delays the Mthatha NMD site results have been delayed. It is hoped that the problem will be resolved soon.

QUEENSTOWN CAMPUS: Report on the Implementation Plan regarding Student Grievances.

Background

Campus Management Committee met on the 2nd June to look at progress made to all matters raised by the SRC as areas of concern. CMC members were to report on work done and also get advices on how to speed up implementation working with stakeholders within and outside the Institution. Below are issues which needed attention.

NSFAS

The Financial Aid Department has forwarded an invitation to the WSU Institutional NSFAS Manager Mr Ntlati to visit Queenstown. We are awaiting confirmation of dates and time frames.

Fundza Lushaka

An Institutional Fundza Lushaka meeting will be held on Tuesday the 6th June wherein all matters pertaining to the Fundza Lushaka Bursary will be attended by the Institutional Fundza Lushaka Busary Administrators and Fundza Lushaka Bursary donors.

CMC has requested Ms Mini to attend this meeting and raise all the issued included in the Memorandum submitted to his office by the affected students from the Department of Education.

CMC has extended an invitation to the Institutional Fundza Lushaka Coordinator Ms Uruba and Dr Molapo to come and respond to all concerns regarding this bursary. We are awaiting confirmation of dates and time frames.

Residence Management.

Most residences have been paid for the first term of the year, the few that is outstanding will be paid in due course.

A correspondence has been submitted to all the Land Lords who are still having tenants in their premises and they have been given up to the 16th June to remove such tenants.

A new residence has been found which can accommodate 38 students and the standard is commendable. This will assist in adding more beds for students to minimize the impasse on shortage of beds.
