In recent times, there has been an increasing demand for answers to what course a student should study at the Senior high school and the job opportunity that comes with the course of study.

It’s important to know that, the course you study at the Senior High school can influence your future career opportunity. So it’s very crucial to choose wisely. In this article, we are going to discuss some of the courses offered at the most senior high schools/technical schools in Ghana with their job opportunities.

Courses Offered at Most Senior High Schools in Ghana

Below are some of the available courses at most of the senior high schools in Ghana. Studying any of the below courses comes with both core subjects and electives. The core subject includes English Language, Core Mathematics, Social Studies, and Inter-Science.

Job Opportunities for The Above available SHS Courses

Below are the career opportunity and future studying courses that a student of any of the above courses can take advantage of.

General Arts

Students who study general art can gain admission into the Faculty of law and the Faculty of arts’ at the University of Ghana, Legon. Entrance into these faculties is very competitive. Students with an aggregate of 6 to 12 have a higher chance of being granted admission.

 The College of Art and Social Sciences at KNUST and Cape Coast University also admits a lot of students with General arts background. Students with an aggregate of 6-15 in WASSCE have a higher chance of being granted admission. A student with general arts background can have a career in Nursing, Teaching, Accountant, Communicator, Editor, Linguist e.t.c

 

Business Study

Students who offered business study at the senior high school are most likely to gain admission into the school of law and business studies, faculty of business administration, University of Ghana Business School. Business students can become Accountants, Financial Analysts, Bank Managers, Cashiers, Business advisors, Investment managers, Auditors, Teachers, and even a company CEO. To gain admission and study business at the senior high school or tertiary level, you must be good in quantitative and mathematics-related subjects.

General Science

Students who are good in Mathematics, Integrated Science, and English Language have a greater probability of excelling in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

After completing senior high school and obtaining a good grade in the general science course, one can gain admission into the College of Health Sciences, the College of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences, and the Faculty of Engineering Science at the University of Ghana, Legon.

 The Job opportunity for a Science Student can be a Doctor, Nurse, teacher, physician, lab technician, and even a Pharmacist. There are more opportunities for General science students.

Visual Arts 

A student who studies creative art has a job career opportunity in painting, sculpture, Drawing Printmaking, and film-making (as contrasted with literature and music).

Students with visual arts and Home economics backgrounds can gain admission into the Department of Integrated Rural Art and Industry.

Visual arts students must offer any of the following electives, General Knowledge, in Art, Picture Making and /or Graphic Design plus Textiles or Sculpture or Leatherwork.

Home Economics

For Admission into the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, a Passes in Management in Living and any two (2) other elective subjects relevant to the preferred option. You can find jobs as professional teachers and Matrons in Senior High Schools and other institutions. Graduates are also offered employment as nutritionists, caterers, and Managers of Restaurants.

Activities like home furnishing, cooking, pastries and food preservation, child upkeep, as well as handy works like sewing, cleaning, among others are taught in the programme.

Final Words:

It’s with noting that, sometimes, the course of studies at the senior high school is not all that important. This is so because, a student can offer a course in say General science at the senior high school, but goes to the university and study Business related courses.
